The brain is one of the final frontiers for earth bound humans to explore. It is who we are, why we do what we do, and is the very organ which allows us to participate in science. However, we know very little about how it is that billions of neurons and support cells can work together to accomplish some very incredible things, like reading this computer screen. Science has reasonable understanding about how an individual neuron works, and even how two neurons interact, but when ensembles 10,000 strong (such as a cortical column) are studied, very little is understood.
